Introduction

 

The Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) envisions to become a world class University dedicated to the development of virtuous human resources and innovation for inclusive growth.  Its mission is to develop globally competitive professionals and industry–ready graduates via various modalities and generate new knowledge and technologies for the improvement of the quality of life.

 

From the University’s vision and mission, the Extension Directorate, as the extension arm of MMSU anchors its programs and projects on the development of innovations for inclusive growth and the generation of new knowledge and technologies for the improvement of quality of life. Along this, the Unit translates academic and research excellence to people’s excellence thru making information and technology work for people.  Its mission is to make MMSU a University for all by contributing significantly to the development of empowered citizens equipped with dynamic rational decision-making and action-oriented capabilities who work more productively and efficiently for improved socio-economic life and sustainable development. 

 

In support to the vision and mission of the University, the College of Business, Economics and Accountancy (CBEA) designed its extension Unit to make the College visible and functional in enabling the community and its people towards sustainable development.  Through its banner extension program, the Community and Enterprises Development Program (CEDP), it empowers people by sharing its manpower resources, intellectual capabilities, research outputs, technology developed along the fields of specializations in entrepreneurship, business education, economics, tourism and hospitality management.

 

 The CBEA draws its strengths from its manpower resources, around 40 faculty and 2,000 students in the nine curricular program offerings to wit: BSAccountancy, BSAccounting Technology, BSBA major in Marketing Management, BSBA major in Human Resources Development Management, BSEntrepreneurship, BS Cooperative Management, BSTourism Management and BS Hospitality Management.   The CEDP is geared towards enterprise, cooperatives, community and people development thru entrepreneurship, good governance, environmental and community tourism based approaches.

 

The ECOD

 The BSEconomics Program takes its active role in the College extension program through its extension Project dubbed as Empowering Communities for Development (ECOD).  It mobilizes its manpower resources faculty and students, knowledge and technology developed in helping communities towards sustainable development. 

 

Generally, the BSEconomics Program develops knowledge skills and tools in economics that are deemed necessary in decision and policy making in government, business industry, non-government organizations and people’s organizations. The study of economic theories and practices enables the students to understand and analyze the complexities of local and global economies. The capstone of the course is the writing of an economic or business research, which is an important basis for management planning and investment decisions.

 

 

 

Specifically the program aims to produce professionals who are:

  1. equipped with adequate knowledge of models, tools and framework in the theoretical ad quantitative analysis of various economic situations for egalitarian ad policy-making as well as responsible business planning;
  2. competent researchers skilled with the identification of socio-economic and development-related problems, application of appropriate research designs data-gathering processing analysis and interpretation;
  3. well-conversant with the preparation of technical and research reports of presentation in various symposia/fora;
  4. capable of establishing strong linkages with various local and international agencies and other stakeholders in the conduct of research and extension activities; and
  5. values-oriented and possess social and economic consciousness towards nation building.

 

The ECOD Program Objectives

            Generally, the ECOD Program, primarily aims to pursue sustainable economic growth and development of communities which will ultimately improve the quality of life of the constituents. 

 

Specifically, the Program aims to: 

 

  1. empower communities through the promotion of community-based organizations such as social enterprises, cooperatives and peoples’ organizations;
  2. plan, implement and monitor extension programs intended to harness the potentials, strengthen and develop competencies of micro and small entrepreneurs, cooperative organizations, women, OSYs and the communities; 
  3. establish linkages and collaborate with other units, government agencies and private organizations, locally and internationally, for the advancement of the extension programs;
  4. source out additional funds and utilize the same for the implementation of approved extension activities;
  5. publish, exchange, collect, store and distribute information necessary to the development of the end-beneficiaries; and
  6. conduct extension cum research activities aimed at improving extension service delivery.

  1. Information – generates information which are readily available as reliable and valid bases for community development planning;

  3. Capability building – strengthen the capabilities of communities and their leaders along community development planning, industry development planning and related concerns;
  4. Linkaging and partnering – establish linkages and partnerships with community organizations, GOs and NGOs which are supportive of the project.

        • Completed the research “Pilot Deployment and R & D Multi-Feedstock Village Scale Modularized Kits for Bio Ethanol Production

        • Completed the “Economic Analysis of he Village-Scale Distillery: Case of Hydrous Ethanol

        • Completed the baseline survey of the technology adopters

        • Presented the Project to th Technology Adapters and finalized the Project Plan

        • Drafted and finalized the MOA and was signed between the MMSU and the Technology recipients, the Cabbagan Women’s Organization in Cabbagan, Pamplona Cagayan

    2. “Supply Chain Improvement of Bamboo: Case of Quasi Integration Model for Region 1”.  Marilou P. Lucas, Mishael Joy Barrera, Marjorie P. Garcia, Orlino J. Mandac

      • Technology Adopters:  The Bamboo Industry in region 1 composed of bamboo farmers/producers, pole traders and assemblers, furniture manufacturers, furniture product retailers, stall owners, mall owners, exportes and ambulant sellers. 

      • Identified issues that were addressed:  lack of a strong cooperative organization of bamboo producers that would provide sustainable supply of quality raw materials, lack of efficient information and communication system relative to quality and pricing of the produc, access o technologies for intermediate processing of th product, and infrastructure support. 

      • Accomplishments: 

        • Completed Phase I –  research “Supply Chain Improvement of Bamboo: Case of Quasi Integration Model for Region 1”

        • conduct of industry baseline survey, conduct of rapid bamboo industry assessment

        • Conducted capacity building  cum values orientation among the membrs of the bamboo industry

    3. Developing Underserved Rural Areas through Services (DUR-AS): MMSU’s Mechanism of Fulfilling the MDG’s through Convergence and Volunteerism.
